04May201813Dec2018 A Trip to Scotland Scott Carnes Our Family Page Posts, Travel Ballatar, Balmoral, edinburgh, glasgow, Iona, Mull, Oban, Scotland, tour, Vacation Apr 19: We made it to Edinburgh! After arriving at 8am, We powered through all day and it was great. We saw the old city and about half the Royal Mile including a tour or Holyrood Palace, observing parliament in action, St Giles Cathedral, John Knox’s House, Grayfriers Kirkyard, and Victoria Street.Apr 20: Today we look it a little easier, touring Gladstone’s Land and Edinburgh CastleApr 21: We picked up the car in Edinburgh, went through Culross (what it lacks in wide-ness of roads it more than makes up for in charm and Outlander filming sites), then drove up through Perth and into the Cairngorns National Park where we’ll be staying the next week. We’re happy to be here and able to relax a little after the drive upApr 22: We got to Ballatar where we will be staying for the next week. This is a charming little town!Apr 23: We picked up the car in Edinburgh, went through Culross (what it lacks in wide-ness of roads it more than makes up for in charm and Outlander filming sites), then drove up through Perth and into the Cairngorns National Park where we’ll be staying the next week. We’re happy to be here and able to relax a little after the drive upApr 23: Spent the afternoon journeying back in time and even got to visit the 18th century village where they filmed OutlanderApr 24: Spent the morning at the Queens summer home.Apr 24: Our castle day continues with Crathes Castle it was in the same family for 400 years and many of the furnishings are still original, as are the stunning painted ceilingsApr 25: A glimpse of life 2,500 years ago at and demonstrations of technology, weaving, fire starting, and cookingWith the last name of Carnes we had to go see some cairns.Apr 26: Toured Glenlivet Distillery, visited Culloden Battlefield, explored Clava CairnApr 27: We hiked this morning at Loch Muick on Balmoral Estate. It was beautiful but pregnancy didn’t allow us to do the full circuit of the lake. Then we toured Royal Lochnager Distillery.Apr 28: After touring the Oban Distillery we said goodbye to the mainland. We had some trouble with the ferry schedule. We sped across the island of Mull and barely made it on the ferry to Iona.We stayed in this pod on this farm on Iona. It was…rustic. We shared the yard with a lot of sheep.Apr 29: We hiked across the Island of Iona. We had lunch at Columba’s bay where Celtic Christianity first came to Scotland.Apr 30: Mull was beautiful (here is a bridge on the island). It was a driving day. We made it to Glasgow where we stayed with Scott’s friend.May 1: Our last day before heading back to the Edinburgh we said goodbye to John & Ryan who were amazing hosts. We shopped and toured Glasgow. f
